Atheists, agnostics most knowledgeable about religion, survey says - chicagotribune.com

Atheists, agnostics most knowledgeable about religion, survey says - chicagotribune.com

I knew it! I've always told my friends, that I can have a theological discussion with an Atheists and no unpleasant words will ever be exchanged.

Now for the moment, forgive this slam on bible thumpers. They always pick and choose "Select Passages" in a feeble attempt at proving a point. They never take the "Entire" passage into account. Whenever they "Condemn" a person according to a certain passage in scripture, they conveniently forget it applies to both sexes. For example: the un-married women having sex calls for "Stoning" in the Christian bible. Another passage informs the reader, that there will "always be the poor". But you have so-called Christians condemning them, laughing, and mocking them. Remember the big joke at the Republican convention in 2008? They took cheap shots at "Community Organizers" all across this country. Sane people know the great work these people do helping the poor, and disadvantaged. And you can bet, many of them are atheists and agnostics.

An Interesting Read I Found On The Web

Frank Schaeffer is a New York Times best selling author.
Obama Will Triumph -- So Will America
By Frank Schaeffer

Before he'd  served even one year President  Obama lost the support
of the easily distracted left and engendered the  white hot rage of
the hate-filled right. But some of us, from all walks of  life and
ideological backgrounds -- including this white, straight,  57-year-
old, former religious right wing agitator, now progressive writer
and (given my background as the son of a famous evangelical leader)
this  unlikely Obama supporter -- are sticking with our President.
Why?--  because he is succeeding.

We faithful Obama supporters still trust  our initial impression of
him as a great, good and uniquely qualified man  to lead us.

Obama's steady supporters will be proved right.  Obama's critics
will be remembered as easily panicked and prematurely  discouraged
at best and shriveled hate mongers at worst.

The Context of the Obama  Presidency

Not since the days of the rise of fascism in  Europe , the Second
World War and the Depression has any president faced  more
adversity. Not since the Civil War has any president led a more
bitterly divided country. Not since the introduction of racial
integration  has any president faced a more consistently short-
sighted and willfully  ignorant opposition - from both  the right
and left.

As the President's poll numbers have fallen so  has his support from
some on the left that were hailing him as a Messiah  not long ago;
all those lefty websites and commentators that were falling  all
over themselves on behalf of our first black president during the
2008  election.

The left's lack of faith has become a self-fulfilling  "prophecy"--
snipe at the President and then watch the poll numbers fall  and
then pretend you didn't have  anything to do with it!

Here is  what Obama faced when he took office-- none of which was
his  fault:

# An ideologically divided country to the point that  America was
really two countries

# Two wars; one that was  mishandled from the start, the other that
was unnecessary and  immoral

# The worst economic crisis since the depression

#  America 's standing in the world at the lowest point in history

# A  country that had been misled into accepting the use of torture
of  prisoners of war

# A health care system in free fall

# An  educational system in free fall

# A global environmental crisis of  history-altering proportions
(about which the Bush administration and the  Republicans had done
nothing)

# An impasse between culture warriors  from the right and left

# A huge financial deficit inherited from  the terminally
irresponsible Bush administration.

And those were  only some of the problems sitting  on the
President's desk!

"Help"  from the Right?

What did the Republicans and the religious  right, libertarians and
half-baked conspiracy theorists -- that is what  the Republicans
were reduced to by the time Obama took office -- do to  "help" our
new president (and our country) succeed? They claimed that he
wasn't a real American, didn't have an American birth certificate,
wasn't  born here, was secretly a Muslim, was white-hating "racist",
was secretly  a communist, was actually the Anti-Christ, (!) and was
a reincarnation of  Hitler and wanted "death panels" to kill the
elderly!

They  not-so-subtly called for his assassination through the not-so-
subtle use  of vile signs held at their rallies and even a bumper
sticker quoting  Psalm 109:8. They organized "tea parties" to sound
off against imagined  insults and all government in general and
gathered to howl at the moon.  They were led by insurance industry
lobbyists and deranged (but well  financed) "commentators" from
Glenn Beck to Rush Limbaugh.

The  utterly discredited Roman Catholic bishops teamed up with the
utterly  discredited evangelical leaders to denounce a president who
was trying to  actually do something about the poor, the
environment, to diminish the  number of abortions through
compassionate programs to help women and to  care for the sick! And
in Congress the Republican leadership only knew one  word: "No!"

In other words the reactionary white, rube, uneducated,  crazy
American far right, combined with the educated but obtuse
neoconservative war mongers, religious right shills for big
business,  libertarian Fed Reserve-hating gold bug, gun-loving
crazies,  child-molesting acquiescent "bishops", frontier loons and
evangelical  gay-hating flakes found one thing to briefly unite
them: their desire to stop an uppity black man from  succeeding at
all costs!

"Help" from the Left?

What did the  left do to help their newly elected president? Some of
them excoriated the  President because they disagreed with the bad
choices he was being forced  to make regarding a war in Afghanistan
that he'd inherited from the worst president in  modern history!

Others stood up and bravely proclaimed that  the President's
economic policies had "failed" before the President even instituted
them! Others said that since all gay rights battles had not been
fully won  within virtually minutes of the President taking office,
they'd been  "betrayed"! (Never mind that Obama's vocal support to
the gay community is  stronger than any other president's has been.
Never mind that he signed a  new hate crimes law!)

Those that had stood in transfixed legions  weeping with beatific
emotion on election night turned into an angry mob  saying how
"disappointed" they were that they'd not all immediately been
translated to heaven the moment Obama stepped into the White House!
Where  was the "change"? Contrary to their expectations they were
still mere  mortals!

And the legion of young new supporters was too busy  texting to pay
attention for longer than a nanosecond. "Governing"?! What  the hell
does that word, uh, like mean?"

The President's critics  left and right all had one thing in common:
impatience laced with  little-to-no sense of history (let alone
reality) thrown in for good  measure. Then of course there were the
white, snide know-it-all  commentators/talking heads who just
couldn't imagine that maybe, just maybe they weren't as smart as
they  thought they were and certainly not as smart as their
president. He hadn't  consulted them, had he? So he must be wrong!

The Obama critics'  ideological ideas defined their idea of reality
rather than reality  defining their ideas-say, about what is
possible in one year in office after the hand that the  President
had been dealt by fate, or to be exact by the American idiot  nation
that voted Bush into office. twice!

Meanwhile back in the reality-based community -  in just 12 short
months -- President Obama:

#Continued to  draw down the misbegotten war in Iraq
(But that wasn't good enough for  his critics)

#Thoughtfully and decisively picked the best of  several bad choices
regarding the war in Afghanistan
(But that wasn't  good enough for his critics)

#Gave a major precedent-setting speech  supporting gay rights
(But that wasn't good enough for his  critics)

#Restored America 's image around the globe
(But that  wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Banned torture of American  prisoners
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Stopped the free fall of the American economy
(But that wasn't  good enough for his critics)

#Put the USA squarely back in the  bilateral international community
(But that wasn't good enough for his  critics)

#Put the USA squarely into the middle of the  international effort
to halt global warming
(But that wasn't good  enough for his critics)

#Stood up for educational reform
(But  that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Won a Nobel peace  prize
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Moved the  trial of terrorists back into the American judicial
system of checks and  balances
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Did  what had to be done to start the slow, torturous and almost
impossible  process of health care reform that 7 presidents had
failed to even  begin
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Responded  to hatred from the right and left with measured good
humor and  patience
(But that wasn't good enough for his critics)

#Stopped  the free fall of job losses
(But that wasn't good enough for his  critics)

#Showed immense personal courage in the face of an armed  and
dangerous far right opposition that included the sort of disgusting
people that show up at public meetings carrying loaded weapons and
carrying Timothy McVeigh-inspired signs about the "blood of
tyrants"  needing to "water the tree of liberty".
(But that wasn't good enough  for his critics)

#Showed that he could not only make the tough  military choices but
explain and defend them brilliantly
(But that  wasn't good enough for his critics)

Other than those  "disappointing" accomplishments -- IN ONE YEAR --
President Obama  "failed"! Other than that he didn't "live up to
expectations"!

Who actually has  failed...

...are the Americans that can't see the beginning  of a miracle of
national rebirth right under their jaded noses. Who failed  are the
smart ass ideologues of the left and right who began rooting for
this President to fail so that they could  be proved right in their
dire and morbid predictions. Who failed  are the movers and shakers
behind our obscenely dumb news cycles that have  turned "news" into
just more stupid entertainment for an  entertainment-besotted
infantile country.

Here's the good news:  President Obama is succeeding without the
help of his lefty "supporters"  or hate-filled Republican  detractors!

The Future Looks  Good

After Obama has served two full terms, (and he will),  after his
wisdom in moving deliberately and cautiously with great subtlety  on
all fronts -- with a canny and calculating eye to the possible
succeeds, (it will), after the economy is booming and new industries
are  burgeoning, (they will be), after the doomsayers are all proved
not just  wrong but silly: let the record show that not all
Americans were panicked  into thinking the sky was falling.

Just because we didn't get  everything we wanted in the first short
and fraught year Obama was in  office not all of us gave up. Some of
us stayed the course. And we will be proved right.

PS. if you agree that Obama is shaping up to be a great president,
please pass this on and hang in there!  Pass it on anyway to ensure
that his "report card" gets the attention it deserves.

Health insurance: Big medical insurers to stop selling new child-only policies - chicagotribune.com

Health insurance: Big medical insurers to stop selling new child-only policies - chicagotribune.com

You knew this was coming. I think it's time for our States to give us an option of buying into Medicaid, and our Federal system, should follow suit. After-all, we already pay into Medicare. So you might as well send out the card.

These companies don't give a New York's Mega Rats Ass about you, or your children. Here's something for all of you to chew on. If Sara Palin had her child next month guess what? That child could not get coverage from an insurance company. That child would be on Medicare, and Medicaid. What's that Sara? Did you say "Death Panels"? Now you see who the "Real Death Panelist" are when it comes to life and death decisions. Yep, the insurance industry. What's that you say Tea Party? You want too "take our country back"? From whom may I ask? The insurance industry? No? Who's going to stop them from denying your children coverage? You? I don't think so. Do you hear that noise people? That's all the "mad as hell people" begging State and Federal government to stop the insurance industry. You know, the same people screaming, and carrying signs that said, and read "Keep your Government Hands Off my Government run Medicare, and Medicaid".

Come on State legislature. Get your act together. Let working men, women, and families buy into Medicaid. Hey you never know, it might help your budgets. The insurance industry sure isn't looking to help anyone.

New questions about Jackson and Senate seat

New questions about Jackson and Senate seat

D'oh! So much for running for Mayor.

If this guy did indeed turn over documents like he said he did, Mr. Jackson Jr. does indeed have more questions that should, and need addressing. What the voters want isn't some rambling, babbling statement such as the one in this article. Politicians just don't get it these days. The old way of doing business is dead. People are sick and tired of being Lied Too! If you did something wrong, fess up, take your lumps, and move on. We are living in the "Age of Technology". That means instant access vie video, and the internet. So for all the dinosaurs out there, get used to it.

So, Mr. Jackson Jr. do the people that you represent a favor. By Friday, tell them you will not consider a run for the office of Mayor of the City of Chicago. See, that's not so hard. It's better then "Ducking Reporters".

Daley's lasting impact :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: The Watchdogs

Daley's lasting impact :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: The Watchdogs

This article is not very good news for any incoming Mayor.

One thing is for sure, if these appointees do any kind of "stall tactics" with any new mayor, they should be replaced immediately. The last thing this city needs is another political war that we saw years back under then mayor Harold Washington. Contrary to popular opinion, that battle was due to nothing more then race, period. Political fighting such as that, did not serve in the interest of the people. Sadly, we have such egomaniacs that have nothing else better to do, then just that. Fixing this city should be a top priority, and anyone standing in the way of such progress, should be removed.

They may have been appointed by the out-going mayor, but they had better remember it's the people that they serve. If they don't, we will be demanding your resignations.

Beck excites conservatives, mocks Michelle Obama :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Politics

Beck excites conservatives, mocks Michelle Obama :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Politics

Boy Satan must be creaming all over himself. All these people got together just for nothing more then just shear hate for others. It just boggles the mind.

Not one idea coming from these hate-mongers. Just hate. They claim they are going to take the country back, while dressing up like colonist that owned slaves. Something is definitely wrong with that picture. They want social security privatized, a war with Islam, and if you disagree with them, you are deemed un-American. Yet the minute a natural, or un-natural disaster strikes, they clamor for government help, that they claim they so righteously distaste. Go figure.

Paying money to hear nothing but slogans, and not one solution, is beyond pathetic, so these hate-mongers should really sit-back and re-examine their hate-filled lives. Keep making Satan cream all over himself. He's just waiting on all of you to come on down and join him.

Gun recovered in officer slaying traced back to Mississippi - chicagotribune.com

Gun recovered in officer slaying traced back to Mississippi - chicagotribune.com

This article is very enlightening for those that wanted to know how a guns journey begins, and winds up here in Chicago.

As a matter of fact, this is how they travel to cities across the country. Each state has different laws on the books. Some stringent, some lenient. Maybe the best way for combating 'straw purchases" is maybe up the sentencing guidelines for those that do it. You have to give them something to seriously think about.

Padded pensions costing Illinois taxpayers millions - chicagotribune.com

Padded pensions costing Illinois taxpayers millions - chicagotribune.com

In my humble opinion, who gave these greedy politicians the okay for doing this? The voter that's who.

There is a great need for ballot initiatives across this country for limiting pay for elected office. The incentive for theft must be reduced. When we the people give them the authority to give themselves a pay raise, we lose. How you ask? Our streets, sidewalks, garbage pick-up, schools, hospitals, and law enforcement suffer from these acts of selfishness. They pocket the money, and cut services. That is flat out wrong.

Every dime taxpayers give, must be accounted for. I want every citizen to be very, very upset about this. It is happening all over the country, and here's the kicker, Party Affiliation has nothing to do with it. They are both ripping us off blind, and it must be stopped.

My last question. Where's the Tea Party Now?

Cocaine stolen from trunk, so man calls 911, police say :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Metro & Tri-State

Boy, what part of the "Patriot Act" these clowns don't understand? It's not only the cell phone, it's the land-line, the internet, and those cameras popping up all over the country.

This guy has to be the dullest knife in the drawer. Well, all of them are a very dull set of knives. Bottom line criminals, you can run all you want. Hiding is the tricky part. You are not a government, nor a big corporation. You just don't have that kind of pull for paying off politicians, judges, and law enforcement. So do something productive. Lobby your legislature, your elected representative, and push for the legalization of marijuana.

Do that. Eventually, you will see improvements in your roads, schools, social services, and a nice mental institution built for the tea party, and neo-conservatives.

Elgin gangs: Civil suit goes after gangs in Elgin - chicagotribune.com

Elgin gangs: Civil suit goes after gangs in Elgin - chicagotribune.com

Hey! I guess you just have to make life so difficult for them that they will just move on somewhere else. But I have several questions about this tactic.

First off, since they are "Known" gang members, shouldn't they already have records on file? I'm going out on a limb here and think, most of those records must have a "Felony" conviction? If not, why not? I'm still in favor of gathering as much evidence as needed, so State, County, Federal, and Local prosecutors can go forward with charges under the RICO statute. I figure you might as well throw everything, including the kitchen sink at them.

But if it's another "tool" for law enforcement, go for it. I'm also not crazy about the "misdemeanor" charge for associating. I think that should get bumped up to felony status. That's the way it is for anyone convicted under felony crimes. So if they are "Known" gang members, you might as well make life so difficult, they might consider another line of "Legal" occupations.

Mixed messages much? This article states crime is down, yet there is another article within this paper, stating crime is soaring on the "CTA". That's the cities public transportation system for those that may not live here.

So the question that needs asking, did they forget about crime on public transportation? Mixed messages indeed.

Dart, Meeks take top two in first Chicago mayor poll :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Carol Marin

Not really a fan of the amount of people polled, it would seem more logical if they did at the very least, a 1ooo people.

600, in my opinion isn't a very good representation. It's like they said unto themselves, let's ask 200 Whites, 200 Blacks, and 200 Hispanics, and just left it at that. Just my two cents. Nevertheless, no campaign ads have appeared, and no official announcements have been made. Sheriff Dart is the only one that came close to a full-blown announcement.

Oh well, I guess we must wait and see what this field of candidates will say. Other then that, come on election time.

Weis knows his days as superintendent numbered :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: City Hall

Monday morning quarterbacking is a bitch.

Dude, you should have never accepted that much money from the get go. You should have never accepted Daley's "hand-picked", report on your activities, snitch as the Chief of Staff. Now this Mayor refuses a simple phone call from you, telling him you would take a pay cut.

I have to admit, this is getting thrown under a bus, and having it roll over you several times. My advice, fix any damage that you may have done. If moral is low, do something for correcting it. Never wear the uniform, when you haven't been in the trenches. Don't be like this current Mayor. Go out on a good note.

Angry Daley rips community for not naming cop's killer :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: City Hall

Angry Daley rips community for not naming cop's killer :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: City Hall

This quote pretty much sums up what is going on in these communities.

"During Wednesday’s debate, Ald. Freddrenna Lyle (6th), Bailey’s Park Manor neighbor, decried the changes that have turned her once tranquil blue-collar neighborhood into a magnet for crime.
Lyle has blamed the CHA’s Plan for Transformation, in part, for the surge of crime that included a Labor Day burglary at the alderman’s home.
“Over the last four or five years, it has become a community that many of us say we don’t understand, we don’t recognize, we don’t know who these people are,” Lyle said.
“I don’t know how many days a week we see some behavior on the street and we say, ‘Where in the world did these people come from and we sure wish they’d go back.’ We’ve never seen people who had such a disrespect for themselves [and] the property of others.”
Referring to slain Chicago Police Officer Thomas Wortham IV, a longtime family friend and Chatham resident who was killed in May, Lyle added, “I’m tired of memorializing officers from the 6th Ward.”

Need anymore be said?

Daley won't seek re-election :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: News

Daley won't seek re-election :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: News

Oh this is music for my ears! Now we get the opportunity to separate all candidates from baloney blowers, too the serious minded.

This is also a great time for the Superintendent of Police to fire that "watchdog" Daley put on his back, and get serious at that department. Since we now have official "Lame-Duck" status for this mayor, let's get the indictments rolling for all those he's protected.

Yes folks, it's clean house time with such an announcement. Now let's see who will throw their respective hats into the ring. And please don't forget, if they are blowing smoke, scratch them off the list. My vote will go to the one that will "Promise" the police department will be "Fully Staffed" within their first year in office. No more cuts in education. And, we want our damn parking meters back! I'm looking for a results-oriented candidate, not another clone of this last guy.

Jobs program in jeopardy - chicagotribune.com

Jobs program in jeopardy - chicagotribune.com

A program that is "FULLY PAID" for. But for some strange reason, we still have a few misguided, misinformed, and disgusting, dirty politicians that simply rather hurt those attempting at making life better for themselves.

It's very easy for anyone to throw their hands in the air, and just say forget the political process. But what really needs to be done, is for all of us voters to send a clear message to our elected representatives. Support the working, and those looking for work, men and women across this country. When we hear an elected official calling us a "Special Interest", vote then out. They are not there showing support for us, but only for the bankers, oil industry, and any other greed merchant that piles money into their pockets.

If any person running for office doesn't have any ideas on helping the people of the United States, don't vote for them. No ideas must equal No votes. Since they refuse to correct this mess we find ourselves in, they certainly do not deserve our vote. Let them hear you, and show them we mean business, regardless of party affiliation.

Kindergarten becomes more challenging - chicagotribune.com

Kindergarten becomes more challenging - chicagotribune.com

Now this is a very thought provoking article.

I can't side with either argument because both have merit. My own niece, and great nephew are testaments for this new learning approach. They can almost run a computer better then myself, which at times is scary. I also can understand the fear that such a curriculum may churn out a generation of robotic adults, that have few social skills, once unleashed upon the world.

But then again, we have the ilk of Beck, Palin, Limbaugh, and others that are classic failures in the social skills department. So go figure. I guess we will just have to wait 20 years for solid results.

4 killed in shooting in Southwest Side garage :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Chicago Crime

Drug related again. Legalize, and tax marijuana. Strengthen sentencing guidelines for the more powerfully addictive drugs such as the infamous crack, powdered cocaine, heroin, and crystal meth.

It isn't rocket science elected officials. For some strange reason, we haven't heard a peep, idea, and advocacy for such actions. I wonder why that is? Could it be that it isn't as prevalent in your neck of the woods? Well I have a news-flash for you. It's because your children pick up their dope up at these places. But don't fear. If you continue doing nothing, it will spread.

Then, and only then, we will see you spring into action. Remember when the great crack explosion hit your communities? Boy you sure jumped into action then. So don't fear, it's only a matter of time when such violence will spread. That is, as long as you elected officials keep sitting on your hands, and remaining quiet.

Gang members: Top cop's threats are harassment :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Mary Mitchell

Oh boo hoo! Talk about gall? Innocent children, young men and women getting caught in the crossfire, and they have the audacity to complain.

Deal with it because your minions are carrying out your orders. Stop this nonsense, or pay the price. It's not harassment when you have been given a choice. I hope you understand the definition of the word Choice? Stop the violence, because you, yes you, issue those orders. You tell your minions to keep rivals out of your so-called turf. Henceforth, violence ensues. If one of your minions go against your orders, you punish them right? So now you have a New Choice. Tell your minions to put the guns down, or get the punishment.

Stop complaining. You were given a choice. Deal with it.

Quinn disagrees with Weis' gang meeting

Quinn disagrees with Weis' gang meeting

Some people should just STFU!

You know, if this guy wants my vote in November, he needs some backbone and support the police in dealing with this horrendous situation.

Don't pay us some lip service by getting on the criticism bandwagon, without doing your job, and passing some legislation down there. Last time I checked, you are the Governor. I haven't heard a peep, nor a plan, from you. I guess you are lucky that your opponent is even more clueless then you appear.

If you haven't heard Mr. Quinn, The United States Supreme Court struck down Mayor Daley's unconstitutional handgun ban. That should have prompted you and the rest of the legislature ample time for coming up with tougher sentencing guidelines for these "Terrorist" running around this State. Ever heard of RICO? Well the Superintendent told these terrorist leaders about it.

I would suggest you look into that if you want my vote come November. Otherwise, who knows, I just might Stay At Home. Stop flapping your lips criticizing attempts of people trying to handle this horrendous situation.
